Sceletium tortuosum, also known as Kanna or Kougoed, is a succulent native to the arid regions of South Africa’s Western and Eastern Cape provinces. For generations, the San hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi pastoral communities of the region have worked with this plant as part of their traditional practices. Archaeological and historical records suggest that Kanna has been used for hundreds of years, with early Dutch settlers documenting trade of the plant as far back as the 17th century.
